History of the Lake Clear Lodge
The Hohmeyer family bought the Lodge over 50 years ago in December of 1965, opening May 28th, 1966--but the Lake Clear Lodge was built in 1886 by the Otis family. When Cathy and Ernest bought the Lodge from Ernest's parents in the early 1990s, they had no idea that Cathy had any family connection to the place. However, a few years after Ernest and Cathy were married, they discovered something extraordinary.
A Story of Family & Fate
They knew that the Lodge had originally been built in 1886, when it was a trading post, post office and inn. It had then been sold to another family, whom Ernest’s parents purchased it from in 1965.
As it turns out, the Lodge was originally built by Cathy’s great uncle!
However, when Cathy and Ernest were going through a big renovation in 1994, they found old postmaster's notes - signed by a Millard Otis. Otis was Cathy’s mother's maiden name, so they looked into it. As it turns out, the Lodge was originally built by Cathy’s great uncle!
This family connection is why it is so important that the Lodge's Adirondack heritage remain an integral part of the Lodge’s cuisine.
Though they didn’t realize it at the time, Cathy and Ernest actually met when they were in first and second grade, respectively. Ernest told Cathy a joke about marriage during recess, and she fell off the slide and broke her arm.
Fast forward to high school and Cathy was working at the Lodge, but Ernest and Cathy never talked much. After high school, they didn’t think they’d see each other again.
Cathy earned her degree in Occupational Therapy and created her own practice in Washington, D.C.
Ernest got a Master’s in International Economics. He had big plans, but unfortunately his father became ill, and he returned to the Lodge to help his Mother sell it. Then, Cathy showed up.
She did not want to let the Lodge sell - there was too much history. Learning Ernest’s mother’s Old World cooking technique’s joined up perfectly with Cathy’s passion for health and wellness. In light of all of this, Cathy decided she would take it over.
Ernest ended up staying to help her get on her feet, but he never left–A few years later they were getting married. It was only after they were married that they found out about Cathy’s connection to the Lodge!
